Barndominium… Barndo’s!

Premiere Ocala Florida Barndominiums Built with CBS Strength and Custom Design

Welcome to Barndominium Pros of Ocala, your trusted local expert for custom-built CBS (concrete block structure) barndominiums in Central Florida. We specialize in designing and constructing long-lasting, storm-resistant, energy-efficient barndominiums using the material Florida trusts most—concrete block.

The popularity of barndominiums is skyrocketing across the country, and for good reason. They’re functional, flexible, and more affordable than many traditional homes. But here in Florida—where humidity, hurricanes, termites, and heat are part of everyday life—not every barndominium style is created equal. That’s why we don’t build with metal kits or wood frames. We build barndominiums that are engineered for Florida, from the slab to the roof, using reinforced CBS methods proven to outlast and outperform.

Whether you want a ranch-style family home, a live/work setup, an equestrian retreat, or a rural compound that blends modern amenities with utility, our team helps you create a space that looks great, lives smart, and lasts a lifetime.

What is a Barndominium?

A barndominium—or barndo—is a hybrid home that combines living space with functional space like garages, workshops, barns, or storage areas. Originating from converted barns and rural utility buildings, today’s barndominiums are new, custom-built homes with open-concept layouts and flexible design.

What sets a barndominium apart is its adaptability. These homes typically:

Eliminate unnecessary walls for expansive living spaces

Blend residential areas with large work or storage areas

Offer cost-effective design and materials

Emphasize functionality and layout over traditional aesthetics

But don’t be fooled—modern barndominiums are every bit as beautiful and comfortable as traditional homes. In fact, most of our clients opt for high-end finishes, designer kitchens, energy-efficient systems, and more. The difference is, a barndo is built around how you actually live—not just how a typical home is designed.

And in Florida, the only smart way to build a barndominium is with CBS.

Barndominium Advantages with CBS! Why You Shouldn’t Use Metal or Wood Kits

In other parts of the country, barndominiums are often built using steel frames or wood posts. These metal buildings can go up quickly—but they’re rarely optimized for the unique challenges of Florida living. That’s why Barndominium Pros of Ocala’s main focus is barndos using CBS (concrete block construction).

Concrete block is Florida’s construction gold standard. It’s used in schools, fire stations, municipal buildings, and high-end custom homes. Here’s why:

  1. Superior Storm Resistance

CBS barndominiums are designed to handle Florida’s hurricane threats. Reinforced block walls offer resistance to wind, flying debris, and water intrusion. Our homes are built to meet or exceed Marion County and Florida Building Code wind load requirements.

  1. Termite and Pest Protection

Concrete blocks cannot be eaten by termites, carpenter ants, or wood-destroying organisms. Florida homes built with wood frames are constantly at risk for infestation. CBS eliminates that problem.

  1. Moisture and Mold Resistance

In a hot, humid environment, mold and mildew are real threats to indoor air quality and structural integrity. CBS walls resist moisture intrusion, and when properly sealed, protect the interior of your home from hidden damage.

  1. Energy Efficiency

CBS construction, combined with proper insulation, high-efficiency windows, and passive solar design, offers outstanding energy performance. These homes maintain cooler indoor temperatures, reducing reliance on air conditioning and lowering utility bills.

  1. Fire Safety

CBS homes are non-combustible. Concrete block doesn’t burn, smolder, or collapse under heat like wood or metal can. That’s a major advantage for safety and insurance value.

  1. Longevity

With proper care, a concrete block home can last over 100 years. That’s not theory—that’s proven. Some of the strongest structures in Florida were built with CBS decades ago and are still going strong today.

Energy Efficiency and Indoor Comfort

Florida’s climate puts serious demands on your home’s HVAC system. But with a CBS barndominium, your structure works with you to maintain comfortable interior conditions.

How?

Thermal mass: Concrete block absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly, helping keep interior temperatures steady.

Insulation: When combined with spray foam or rigid insulation, CBS walls outperform traditional frame walls in energy retention.

Air sealing: Properly sealed block structures prevent air leaks and drafts.

Window placement: We design with natural light and passive solar principles in mind.

Cool roofing materials: We offer roof systems that reflect sunlight and reduce solar gain.

The result is a home that stays cooler, longer, especially during Florida’s hottest months. That leads to real energy savings—and better comfort year-round.

Barndominium Savings and Budget Considerations

One big advantage of a barndominium is that it often costs less than a traditional home with the same size and features. So, the average cost to have a home built in Florida is about $175 to $250 a square foot, not counting the land, fill dirt, tree work, the survey, septic, well, etc., or any upgrades. Now we can typically get a standard CBS project built for around $150 a square foot for the building, not counting the peripheral stuff, such as the land you purchase (and we can give you advice in that area), any fill dirt, the survey, etc., and septic or well if needed. Especially if we keep the aesthetics and everything closer to a standard traditional home; if you want expensive interior upgrades or exterior upgrades, like metal siding or a metal roof, that will increase the price. So, at about $150 a square foot for the structure, we come in around 15% cheaper than the low end of that average. Now, if you’re going to keep it like what traditional Barndo owners want, and what first spurred the talk of barndominiums being cheaper, as in having a smaller under-air living space and a larger part of the structure be what is considered unfinished space, like a garage, workshop, or studio, that’s where you can take advantage of a little more savings.

What are the cost advantages of a CBS Barndominium?

Simplified construction: CBS block walls go up efficiently with fewer trades involved.

Open floorplans: Less interior framing means fewer materials and faster finishes.

Multi-use layout: Combine garage, shop, home, and storage into one efficient footprint.

Energy savings: Lower monthly utility bills help offset initial costs over time.

Reduced maintenance: Fewer repairs and no pest damage = long-term savings.

At Barndominium Pros of Ocala, we don’t inflate your cost with upgrades you don’t need. We help you invest in the features that truly matter to your lifestyle, long-term performance, and property value.

Who We Build Barndominiums For

At Barndominium Pros of Ocala, our clients come from all walks of life. But they all share something in common: they want a home that functions better, lasts longer, and reflects how they actually live.

Here are just a few examples of who we work with:

Barndo’s for Hobbyists, Makers, and Creatives

For those who love to build, create, fix, or design, a traditional home often comes with compromises: not enough space, poor ventilation, lack of soundproofing, or the constant need to “make do” in a corner of a garage or spare room. But a barndominium changes everything.

One of the greatest advantages of building a custom barndo is the opportunity to design your home around your passions. Whether you’re a woodworker shaping furniture from raw timber, a car enthusiast restoring vintage classics, a ceramic artist working with kilns and glazes, or a craftsperson running a small handmade goods business—an  Ocala barndominium gives you the room, resilience, and flexibility to truly thrive.

With a barndominium, your hobby zone isn’t an afterthought—it’s part of the blueprint. We’ll help you create a space that meets your exact needs, whether that’s a:

Woodshop with dust collection systems, sound insulation, and custom tool storage

Auto bay with high ceilings, reinforced slabs for lifts, and roll-up doors for vehicle access

Sewing and craft studio with built-in cabinetry, cutting tables, and bright natural light

Pottery or ceramic room with kiln-ready utility service and fire-safe construction

Art or photography studio with flexible lighting, north-facing windows, or black-out zones

And because we build using concrete block construction, your workspaces are naturally insulated from noise, temperature fluctuations, and moisture—keeping tools and materials safer, and your home quieter.

Many hobbyists love that barndominiums offer attached but separated spaces. You can have your workshop just steps away from your kitchen, while still maintaining a distinct boundary between work and rest. No more dragging tools through the house or dealing with fumes or sawdust near your living areas.

Plus, CBS Construction offers superior fire resistance and structural integrity, which is especially important for those using high-heat tools, paints, finishes, or machinery.

Your hobbies might start in a single bay, but they can quickly evolve. Because Ocala barndominiums are designed with flexibility in mind, it’s easy to expand your workspace later—adding new bays, upgrading electrical systems, or finishing out additional square footage without costly redesigns.

Whether you’re building furniture as a side hustle, painting full-time, or just enjoying the meditative rhythm of crafting something by hand, your barndominium will support your passion—not limit it.

Barndominium Lifespan and Long-Term Value

A CBS barndominium isn’t just a house—it’s a legacy asset.

When built properly, your home can last 75 to 100 years or longer with minimal structural issues. This isn’t hypothetical. Concrete block homes from the 1950s still stand strong all over Florida.
